Campylobacteriosis is the leading cause of diarrhea in the developing world, with the number of cases exceeding those of salmonellosis and shigellosis.
Campylobacteriosis is the name of the illness caused by C. jejuni. It is also often known as campylobacter enteritis or gastroenteritis.
Symptoms of illness caused by Campylobacter jejuni include: diarrhea (which may be quite severe and bloody), fever, headache, nausea and severe abdominal pain.
The illness may linger for 1 to 2 weeks and there may be a relapse when recovery seems imminent.
This illness is more severe in adults than in children and can sometimes lead to a form of reactive arthritis.
Symptoms of the illness are similar to other food borne illness caused by Salmonellosis spp, Shigella spp and Escherichia coli.
