Bird Flu: Causes and Impact

Bird flu, scientifically known as avian influenza, refers to a highly contagious viral infection primarily affecting birds. The term encompasses a range of influenza viruses that mainly afflict avian species, though some strains can also infect humans and other animals. Historically, bird flu has been documented since the early 20th century, with notable outbreaks occurring sporadically around the world.

The significance of bird flu lies in its potential to cause devastating outbreaks, both in terms of animal health and human public health. While not all strains pose a direct threat to humans, certain variants, such as H5N1 and H7N9, have raised concerns due to their ability to infect humans and occasionally result in severe illness or even death.

Bird flu viruses typically originate from wild aquatic birds, such as ducks and geese, which serve as natural reservoirs for these viruses. Through various modes of transmission, including direct contact with infected birds, contaminated surfaces, and inhalation of airborne particles, the virus can spread rapidly within poultry flocks and occasionally spill over to humans.

Humans infected with bird flu may experience a range of symptoms, including fever, cough, sore throat, and muscle aches, similar to seasonal flu. However, severe cases can progress to pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome, posing significant challenges for diagnosis and treatment. Diagnostic methods include laboratory tests such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and serological assays, which help identify the specific strain and assess the extent of infection.

Prevention and control measures play a crucial role in mitigating the spread of bird flu. Vaccination of poultry, especially in high-risk regions, helps reduce the likelihood of outbreaks. Additionally, implementing strict biosecurity measures on farms, such as restricting access to outsiders and regularly disinfecting facilities, can minimize the risk of transmission. Surveillance and monitoring programs enable early detection of outbreaks, facilitating prompt intervention and containment efforts.

Despite efforts to control bird flu, global impact and outbreaks continue to pose significant challenges. Historical outbreaks, such as the 1997 Hong Kong H5N1 outbreak and the 2004 H7N3 outbreak in Canada, underscore the unpredictable nature of the virus. Recent cases, including sporadic human infections and localized poultry outbreaks, highlight ongoing concerns regarding the virus's persistence and potential for resurgence. The economic and social consequences of outbreaks, ranging from loss of livelihoods in the poultry industry to disruptions in international trade, emphasize the need for sustained vigilance and collaboration in combating bird flu on a global scale.

Etiology of bird flu

This acute, highly contagious respiratory infection usually occurs in colder months and in infrequent epidemics. It is an acute highly infectious of the upper and lower respiratory tracts that occurs in isolated cases or in epidemics.

The disease is directly transmitted by droplets inhaled from an infected personals sneezing or coughing or by indirect contact with contaminated objects, such as drinking glass.

The virus resists host antiviral cytokines, inducing excessive host pro-inflammatory responses. It may cause death by ‘cytokine storm’ rather than by inherent pathogenicity.

One type of bird flu is caused by the avian influenza A virus which can cause infection in birds and humans. Type A is the most virulent and usually affects young adults first and then spreads to the very young and very old in community.

The natural reservoirs of influenza A viruses – the etiologic agents of avian flu - are the aquatic birds of the world, particularly ducks, in which the viruses appear to be in evolutionary stasis or equilibrium with their natural host causing no disease.

Bird flu symptoms

Bird flu or influenza A (H5N1) is a subtype of the type A influenza virus. Symptoms of bird flu infection in humans depend on the particular strain of virus.

Bird to human transmission was first documented in 1997 in Hong Kong.

In case of the H5N1 virus, symptoms ranged from classic flulike symptoms which might include headache, malaise, dry or productive cough, sore throat, fever greater than 38 °C, runny nose, difficulty breathing, diarrhea and muscle aches to eye infections, pneumonia, severe respiratory diseases, viral pneumonia, Acute Respiratory Syndrome, multi organ failure and other severe and life threatening.

These symptoms generally become more severe fairly rapidly. H5N1 seems to replicate more rapidly and attacks the lungs more aggressively than seasonal flu.

If the patient is on an advance stage with marked involvement of the respiratory start with manifestations of acute respiratory disease syndrome, the terminal lung failure conditions, the chances of recovery are less even with the best possible treatment.

Bird Flu: Indonesia Latest News

A 20 yrs. old Indonesian woman died from the avian influenza virus - H5N1 bird flu virus, in west Java on Saturday night after undergoing a two-day treatment for bird flu symptoms.

The latest mortality was Indonesia's 64th from 84 cases of the H5N1 avian influenza virus, and was the sixth death in 2007.

Indonesia has the world's highest fatality tally from the disease. Vietnam has had 42 human deaths from the virus, but none in more than a year. With the flu spreading around the world, the virus has turned up in birds in Asia and Europe, and, most recently, Africa. So far, bird flu has mostly been passed from birds either to other birds or, in isolated cases, to humans.

In June 2006, WHO reported the first case of human transference of the disease, when an Indonesian man died after catching the flu from his 10-year-old son. If the flu mutates into a strain that can pass more readily from human to human, people will have no immunity and the flu will probably pass rapidly from person to person, creating a pandemic.

Flu vaccines can only be made to protect against a particular virus, and, since the virus had yet to be passed from human to human, no vaccine has been developed.Indonesia will not share bird flu virus samples with foreign laboratories until the World Health Organisation has rules in place to ensure they are not used commercially, a senior Indonesian health official said on Friday.Indonesia on Wednesday said it would only share its H5N1 samples with those agreeing not to use them commercially.

The announcement came as it signed a preliminary agreement with a unit of pharmaceutical firm Baxter International Inc. Under the pact the health ministry's research and development institute will supply the U.S. firm specimens of H5N1; Baxter will provide technology to help develop a vaccine.
