Angiostrongyliasis: A Parasitic Threat to the Nervous System

Angiostrongyliasis is a parasitic infection caused by roundworms of the Angiostrongylus genus, primarily Angiostrongylus cantonensis, or rat lungworm. This zoonotic disease affects the central nervous system, leading to eosinophilic meningitis—a rare but severe condition involving inflammation of the brain and spinal cord membranes.

Humans acquire the infection by consuming raw or undercooked intermediate hosts such as snails, slugs, freshwater prawns, or crabs. Contaminated vegetables, fruits, and water are additional sources. After ingestion, infective larvae migrate to the brain, triggering a cascade of neurological symptoms.

Symptoms typically emerge within one to four weeks and range from mild to severe. Patients often experience intense headaches, neck stiffness, nausea, and vomiting. Neurological symptoms, including numbness, tingling, and hypersensitivity, are common. Severe cases can progress to paralysis, coma, or even death. Although fatalities are rare, the infection's neurological complications can lead to long-term disability.

Diagnosing angiostrongyliasis is challenging due to its nonspecific symptoms. Clinicians rely on a combination of patient history—particularly exposure to potential infection sources—and the presence of elevated eosinophils in cerebrospinal fluid. Advanced imaging techniques like MRI can help identify inflammation in the central nervous system, but definitive diagnosis requires specialized laboratory tests, including PCR for parasite DNA.

Currently, no specific antiparasitic drug is approved for treating angiostrongyliasis. Management focuses on alleviating symptoms. Corticosteroids help reduce inflammation, while pain relievers address severe headaches. In some cases, lumbar punctures are performed to relieve intracranial pressure. Experimental treatments, such as albendazole and other anthelmintics, have shown promise but require further study.

Preventive measures are critical. Thoroughly washing and cooking food, especially leafy vegetables, and avoiding raw or undercooked snails and slugs are essential. Public health education in endemic regions, including Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of the Americas, plays a pivotal role in reducing infection rates.

In conclusion, angiostrongyliasis poses a significant public health threat in endemic areas. Heightened awareness, rigorous hygiene practices, and research into effective treatments are vital for mitigating its impact.

Understanding Infectious Conjunctivitis: Causes, Symptoms, Prevention, and Treatment

Infectious conjunctivitis, or pink eye, is a common eye condition characterized by inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin membrane covering the white part of the eye and the inner eyelids. This inflammation is often triggered by viral or bacterial infections, making it highly contagious. Understanding the causes, symptoms, and preventive measures is essential for reducing its spread.

Viral conjunctivitis, typically caused by adenoviruses, is highly contagious and associated with symptoms such as redness, watery discharge, and a gritty feeling in the eye. Adenoviruses are also known for causing respiratory infections, which can accompany eye symptoms. Viral conjunctivitis spreads quickly through direct contact with infected eye secretions or contaminated objects like towels or eye makeup, and its contagious period can last up to two weeks, even after symptoms start to fade. Another viral cause is the herpes simplex virus, though it is less common and generally more severe, sometimes leading to corneal involvement that requires antiviral treatment.

Bacterial conjunctivitis, commonly caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae, presents with different symptoms, including a thick, yellow-green discharge that can cause the eyelids to stick together, especially in the morning. This type of conjunctivitis can spread through direct contact with eye secretions, respiratory droplets, or contaminated hands and surfaces. In some cases, it can lead to complications if untreated, such as keratitis, an infection of the cornea.

Preventive hygiene practices are crucial for controlling the spread of conjunctivitis. Regular hand washing with soap and water, avoiding touching or rubbing the eyes, and refraining from sharing personal items like makeup, towels, or contact lenses can greatly reduce transmission. Those infected should minimize close contact with others and disinfect surfaces like doorknobs, faucets, and electronic devices.

Treatment for conjunctivitis depends on the cause. Viral conjunctivitis usually resolves within one to two weeks without medication, but cool compresses and artificial tears can relieve symptoms. Bacterial conjunctivitis, however, often requires antibiotic eye drops or ointments, which can speed recovery and reduce contagion risk.

Coronavirus disease

Coronaviruses are a group of viruses belonging to the family of Coronaviridae, which infect both animals and humans. Coronavirus (COVID-19) is an illness caused by a virus that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a new coronavirus that has spread throughout the world.

This pandemic (caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2) is the greatest threat not only to global health but also has far-reaching socio-economic impact on nearly all the countries in the world.

The first cases of coronaviruses in human found in 1965 by Tyrrell and Bynoe. They observed that they could passage a virus named B814. It was observed in human embryonic tracheal organ cultures obtained from the respiratory tract of an adult with a common cold symptom. The first 4 cases of COVID-19 were first reported on the 29th December 2019, all linked to Huanan (Southern China) seafood wholesale market. Many of the initial patients were either stall owners, market employees, or regular visitors to this market. Environmental samples taken from this market in December 2019 tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, further suggesting that the market in Wuhan City was the source of this outbreak or played a role in the initial amplification of the outbreak.

Another coronavirus, SARS-CoV-1, the cause of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2003, was also closely related to other coronaviruses isolated from bats. These close genetic relations of SARS-CoV-1, SARSCoV-2 and other coronaviruses, suggest that they all have their ecological origin in bat populations.

Signs and symptoms include respiratory symptoms and include fever, cough and shortness of breath. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome and sometimes death.

Standard recommendations to prevent the spread of COVID-19 include frequent cleaning of hands using alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water; covering the nose and mouth with a flexed elbow or disposable tissue when coughing and sneezing; and avoiding close contact with anyone that has a fever and cough.

Prevention of communicable disease

A communicable disease is one that can be transmitted from one person to another, is caused by an agent that is infectious and is transmitted from a source, or reservoir to a susceptible host.

Prevention and control of infections and contagious diseases are the foundations of all public health measures. There are three key factors in the control of communicable disease are as follows:
*The removal, elimination or containment of the cause or source of infection
*The disruption and blockage of the chain of disease transmission
*The protection of the susceptible population from infection and disease

The goal of prevention and control programs is to reduce the prevalence of a disease to a level at which it no longer poses a major public health problem.

The methods of prevention and control are used in several fronts. The first front is the environment, the second is the person at risk and the third front is the population or community.

Immunization is one of the most accepted and cost-effective preventive health practices in the United States. Since the 1950s, vaccines have prevented countless days of illness and hundreds of thousands of deaths.

How to prevent yeast infections in children?

The most common type is Candida albicans, which develops into the white cheesy like yeast that is found typically in areas where the skin is moist. Children can develop a yeast imbalance and its accompanying symptoms.

Candida may exacerbate diaper rash, as this yeast grows readily on damaged skin. The infected skin usually fiery red with lesions that may have a raised red border. Children who suck their thumps or other fingers may occasionally develop Candida around their fingernails.

In preventing or taking measures of addressing reoccurring yeast infections in children it is important to start with building up their immune system. Total prevention of infections may not be a practical expectation because the majority of infections are opportunistic or have an endogenous source.

Therefore, social isolation of the child is not recommended. The best and most natural method of accomplishing this is through diet.

A child's diet should be rich in natural foods and provide the necessary vitamins and minerals to ensure the child's full development. Supplements may be indicated that provide anti-oxidants, minerals, vitamins, etc.

It is also important not to introduce foods into the child's digestive system that may contain the very elements everybody are trying to avoid.

This element is fungus or mold. Therefore, a child's diet should be free of peanuts or peanut butter as these products may contain mold. Guaranteed organic peanut butter or peanuts is permissible.

Drinking cranberry juice and eating yoghurt helps get rid of yeast infections.

Teaching the child good physical hygiene is recommend. Hand washing after play, contact with animals, and toileting should be taught. Routine oral care after meal and at bedtime and visits to the dentist twice a year are necessary.
